About the Event
From July twelfth through July fourteenth, I am going to be participating in Avon's Three-Day walk for Breast Cancer from San Jose to San Francisco. The walk is sixty miles, around twenty each day, and if you are secretly saying to yourself "well, it's just walking", you have never tried walking for six hours in July! It is going to be a lot of work, but I know that for me personally, this task is going to be incredibly worth while. For the recipients of the funds this charity generates, I can only imagine what it means.

  • 1,000,000 women in America are living with undetected breast cancer.
  • In America this year, a new case of breast cancer will be diagnosed every 3 minutes. Every 13 minutes, the disease will claim another life.
  • 1 out of 9 women in America will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. That's up from 1 out of 14 in 1960.
  • Over 70% of breast cancer cases occur in women with no identifiable risk factors.
  • Breast cancer increase with age, rising sharply after age 40.
  • A screening mammogram is a simple, low dose x-ray procedure that can reveal breast cancer at its earliest stage - up to two years before it's large enough to be felt. Yet in 1997, a survey showed that only 58% of women age 50 and older had received a mammogram within the last year.

Avon Breast Cancer Crusade
The mission of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade is to fund access to care and find a cure for breast cancer. The net proceeds from the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day fund five vital areas of the breast cancer cause, with a focus on medically underserved women: biomedical research, clinical care, financial assistance and support services, educational seminars and advocacy training, and early detection and awareness programs nationwide. For more information, visit www.avoncrusade.com.

Your Dollars at Work
Since 1993, the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has funded some 600 non-profit, community-based breast health programs throughout the United States. These programs provide women with breast cancer education and referrals at low or no cost, state-of-the-art breast cancer screening services, mammograms, and clinical breast exams. The particular focus of these programs, as with all Avon Crusade-funded programs, is on the needs of medically underserved women: low-income, minority, under- and uninsured.
The Avon Breast Care Fund is the coordinating center for all funding gifts to such community-based breast health programs. As of 2002, financing, technical training, and assistance is being provided to 114 of these programs nationwide, with at least one active program in all 50 states and Washington DC. Here are just some of their life-saving accomplishments, made possible in large by fundraising efforts such as the 3-Day:
  • 100,000 women were assisted in accessing mammograms and other diagnostic procedures, 10% of whom had abnormal findings and were assisted into follow-up treatment.
  • 2.3 million women were educated on breast cancer early detection and how to perform breast self-examinations.

Forty percent of these programs are among the smallest in the nation - these programs have proven to be the most effective in reaching women within low socio-economic communities. The Avon Breast Care Fund provides the nurturing and training to ensure their sustainability.
